- W2015263412 abstract "P-344 Abstract: Human exposure to pollution in the Arctic is a potential health risk for the local populations. Epidemiological studies in Greenland have shown that human blood levels of several organic contaminants are very high, mainly in North and North East Greenland where people depend on local food. In Ittoqqortoormiit (Scoresbysund) the population has the highest blood levels of several organic pollutants found in Arctic countries, especially PCB which exceed Canadian guideline levels. Thus these populations may be at increased risk for any potential adverse effect of long time exposure to organic pollutants. Study Design: The cross-sectional study which was part of the Arctic Monitoring and Assess Programme included 187 men and 168 women (18–49 years) from 4 districts in Greenland. It was based upon questionnaires including dietary survey, anthropometric measures, blood lipids analysis, heavy metals and organic pollutants (betaHCH, chlordanes, DDTs, Hexachlorobenzene, Mirex, PCBs, and toxaphenes). Results: Compared to earlier epidemiological studies in Greenland we found an increasing proportion of overweight subjects and increased levels of serum triglyceride, cholesterol and cardiovascular risk indices. The plasma n–3 fatty acids were still associated with the well known lowering effect on serum- triglycerides. However, this effect was only significant after adjusting for PCBs and/or DDTs which were found to be associated with elevated levels of s-triglyceride and lower HDL. Among women only and after adjustment for age, BMI, n–3/n–6, DDE and DDT, several PCB congeners (CB 99,101,105,128,183) were found to be significantly correlated with increased levels of triglyceride and decreased levels of HDL. Whereas CB 138, 153, 156, 170 and 180 were neutral. Conclusion: It thus seems that for women long time exposure to specific PCB-congeners in the Arctic diet increases risk for metabolic syndrome, despite the protective effect of the dietary fatty acids." @default.
