- W2015275876 abstract "The mass-related aerobic demand of walking (VO2 expressed in ml·kg−1·min−1) can be predicted reasonably well in adults. Because children are less economical than adults, use of adult-based equations to predict walking economy in youth results in an underestimation of VO2. Hence, the purpose of this study was to develop a generalized equation to predict VO2 during level treadmill walking in young boys and girls. Beginning at age 6 and ending at age 10, 23 able-bodied children (14 girls, 9 boys) completed six 5-min walking bouts at 40.2, 53.6, 67, 80.4, 93.8, and 107.2 m·min−1 (1.5 to 4 mph) on an annual basis. Prior to testing, each child received 60 min of treadmill walking practice. During the last 2 min of each walking trial, a 2-min sample of expired gas was collected in a meteorological balloon and analyzed to determine VO2. Using stepwise regression, walking speed (WS) (m·min−1), WS2, age (yrs), and sex (0 = girls; 1 = boys) were evaluated for their ability to predict VO2. After inspecting adjusted R2 values and considering the issue of parsimony in model selection, the following equation was deemed best suited to predict walking economy (VO2 = 24.852 - .263 (WS) +.003214 (WS)2 - 0.995 (age); R = 0.95, SEE = 1.74 ml·kg−1·min−1). Using this equation, the distribution of prediction errors was well-balanced, yielding only a 10% difference between underestimation and overestimation of VO2. In conclusion, we have shown that walking economy during level treadmill walking can be predicted accurately in healthy 6- to 10-yr-olds. From a practical standpoint, the availability of a generalized equation to estimate walking VO2 should aid researchers and clinicians in deriving valid predictions of locomotor energy expenditure in able-bodied children.
