- W2015310010 abstract "Isokinetic dynamometry has been used as a potential countermeasure tool during space flight. Exercise prescription during space flight must account for the metabolic demands if the protocol is to be successful. Metabolic criteria for space flight include caloric expenditure, exercise efficiency, and heat production, both in absolute terms and relative to strength performance. Thus space flight exercise prescription should attempt to maximize work while minimizing metabolic stresses. The present investigation examines maximal concentric (C) and eccentric (E) actions at a constant angular velocity to determine which mode is preferable for space flight. Eight female volunteers gave written consent for participation. C or E-only training was performed on two days, separated by a minimum of 96 hours, with contractile mode randomized per subject. Volunteers performed 4 sets of 12 repetitions of elbow flexion at a velocity of 60 deg/s on a Lido isokinetic dynamometer (Loredan Inc., Davis, Ca) while their oxygen consumption was recorded on a Sensomedics 2900 metabolic cart (Sensomedics Corporation, Yorba Linda, Ca). Rest periods were held constant at 60 seconds. Data were analyzed using a MANOVA and post-hoc ANOVAs to determine the source of the significance. An alpha level was established at the 0.05 level. Total work/kcal (291.1 ± 101.4 versus 176.2 ± 50.4) and total work/kcal/bodyweight (4.13 ± 1.85 versus 2.45 ± 0.73) were significantly greater in the eccentric mode, with a trend towards significance for the following variables: total work, heat production, and mean work/bodyweight (p ≈ 0.08-0.10). These data indicate an exercie countermeasure prescription for space flight should have an eccentric emphasis." @default.
