- W2015332865 abstract "A total of eighty day-old commercial broiler chicks were randomly divided into two equal groups. The birds received the same diet for 6 weeks. One group was brooded at a room temperature of 32 C and the second at 22 C for 6 weeks. At 6 weeks of age, the chicks were weighed individually and feed consumption for each treatment summarized. At the beginning and at the conclusion of the study, 7 birds were randomly selected from each temperature regimen and killed. Excreta were collected at the end of 6th week of age. Combustible energy of the diet, excreta, and the whole chick's body were determined. The body tissue samples were subjected to ether extraction and nitrogen analysis. The results indicated that: 1) the lower environmental temperature enhanced growth rate and feed consumption; 2) ambient temperature had no clear effect on metabolizable energy determination; 3) birds brooded in the cooler room environment had higher weight gain values than those grown in the warmer environment; 4) difference between the direct and indirect determinations of carcass energy was 2.5%; 5) energy per gram of dry tissue increased with decreasing ambient temperature; and 6) the energy gain value for birds reared at 22 C was higher than at 32 C; however, the improvement in efficiency was slight at the lower environmental temperature." @default.
