Operative times, selected cycle characteristics, and post-operative recovery intervals were also recorded for study. Descriptive, case-series analysis. Intravenous doses of diprivan, sublimaze, and versed were monitored prospectively in IVF cycles (n=138); each patient received all three anesthetic agents and underwent only a single IVF treatment. Duration of anesthesia administration, length of surgery, number of oocytes retrieved and peak serum E2 were measured with respect to patient age and BMI. Among women age <33 (n=58), mean±SD BMI was 25±2kg/m2. For patients with age≥33 (n=80), mean±SD BMI was 28±9kg/m2 (p=0.2). While sublimaze and versed dosing was similar for both groups (p=0.6 and 0.98, respectively), utilization of diprivan was significantly higher for younger women (age <33: 186±81mg vs. age≥33: 159±72mg; p=0.04). As expected, when data were stratified by BMI, heavier patients with BMI≥25 required significantly more diprivan than patients with BMI <25 (191±91mg vs. 159±65mg; p=0.01). However, this larger anesthetic requirement was not applicable to sublimaze and versed which followed similar dosing irrespective of BMI. Total i.v. anesthesia time for oocyte retrieval was significantly (p=0.003) longer among patients age<33 (30±9min) compared to that for patients ≥33 (26±7min). This observation was associated with number of oocytes retrieved which was also greater in the younger group (21±9 vs. 17±10; p=0.01). Interestingly, the time to complete oocyte retrieval (duration of surgery) did not differ significantly between the two age groups (age <33: 16±5min vs. age≥33: 14±5min; p=0.07). Average postoperative recovery time after IVF was similar for both groups, with patients age <33 requiring 73±38min, and patients age≥33 requiring 68±25min (p=0.42), before discharge home. Outpatient oocyte retrieval was well tolerated by all patients; there were no complications or re-admissions. Intravenous anesthesia is an important component of oocyte collection for in vitro fertilization. In this series, neither surgical time required to complete oocyte retrieval nor overall post-operative recovery time appeared to be directly influenced by age or BMI. Our data reveal a fairly uniform consumption of i.v. sublimaze and versed, although diprivan dosing appears to require special adjustments depending on age and BMI." @default.
