- W2015514546 abstract "PURPOSE: This study investigated the functional changes resulting from a formal comprehensive fitness program including balance, cardiovascular and strength training in a frail senior population (58 seniors (F=41, M=17); 78.6(6.5) yrs, 163.1(10.2) cm, 72.1(15.6) kg andBMI = 26.9(4.3)). METHODS: Prior to the start of the exercise program, medical clearance was received for each person. All participants were assessed using a senior fitness protocol developed by Rikli & Jones (2001). The 6 components tested were Chair Stand, Arm Curl, 6-Minute Walk, Chair Sit-And-Reach, Back Scratch and 8-Foot Up-And-Go. Surveys were completed for medical and disease history, prescription drug usage and composite physical function scale (Rikli & Jones, 1998). In addition, self-assessed quality of life, depression and health survey information were obtained. Comparisons were made at 0 & 6 months for the fitness tests. Rank scores were compared using Wilcoxon/Kruskal-Wallis tests. Because an independent Spearman's Rho correlation was observed for the number of diseases to all performance variables, pre and post analyses were disease weighted. RESULTS: Descriptive data analyses indicate the average disease number for M = 4.3(1.8) and F = 3.9(2.1). Rank scores for all 6 components tested ranged between 22nd −46th and 33nd −58th percentile in males and females respectively. Total training sessions were 65 for F and 73 for M on average at approximately 30 minutes per visit. The only significant functional assessment difference prior to starting the exercise program was the 8-Foot Up-And-Go test with women showing a 103% higher rank than men (p=0.01). There were no significant gender training adaptation differences except in the Chair Stand test (p=0.01). In that test, females showed a 199% > percentile rank improvement compared to males (F=1 3.1(35.9), M=4.4(25.8); p=0.01). On average, females improved in percentile rank scores compared to males (F=10.8(22.1), M=6.8(17.0);p=0.08). For men and women combined, Chair Stand, Arm Curl, 6-Minute Walk and 8-Foot Up-And-Go significantly improved (p=0.05). CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate a formal program of exercise in frail seniors resulted in significant physical improvements. Future research needs to determine the effects of these improvements on activities of daily living." @default.
