- W2015652295 abstract "1) The Phorid, Megaselia scalaris, is a very favorable object for investigating a series of genetic problems. 2) A list of genes discovered to date and a provisional genetic map have been presented. 3) The determination of male sex is effected through a dominant epistatically-operating realizer which appears to lie terminally on the chromosome and which is exchanged between the three non-homologous chromosomes by a regular translocation process with frequencies of ca. 0.05 per cent to 0.4 per cent. Depending on the site of the realizer one of the three linkage groups displays partial sex-linked heredity. There is no classic sex-linked heredity. This newly discovered type of alternating sex determination may also be present in the Chironomidae. 4) Through this mechanism a unisexual polymorphism was postulated in natural populations. The possibility of an adaptive importance and the phylogenetic significance of this alternating mode of sex determination is discussed. 5) Crossing-over occurs in the male sex in Megaselia. The crossing-over values in males as compared to females are variably reduced. The magnitude of the reduction of this ratio depends on the position of the zone in question in the chromosome and is probably related to the distance of this zone from the chromocenter." @default.
