- W2015669901 abstract "When did the United States become a nation of shareholders? Steve Fraser's Every Man a Speculator: A History of Wall Street in American Life (2005) suggests that the process began during the First Great Merger wave of 1897–1907, when corporations issued large numbers of common stocks. Lawrence Mitchell's The Speculation Economy: How Finance Triumphed over Industry (2007) posits that it occurred a bit later, from 1907–1914. Both works highlight the Liberty Bonds campaigns of World War I, which taught middle-class Americans to invest in securities. All of this, they argue, paved the way for the bull market in stocks that lasted from 1915 to 1929. At its height, some 15 to 20 percent of Americans owned common stocks. But the appeal of equities crashed along with the market in 1929; in the next three years the stock market lost 90 percent of its value, and wooing back the individual investor proved to be difficult. Even in 1952, only 4 percent of the population, or one in sixteen adults, owned stocks. By 1970, those figures had gone up considerably, to one in four adults." @default.
