- W2015679908 abstract "Movement of the visual scene across your retina could be caused by the movements of objects, the movements of your eyes, or your body movements. The visual system, with help from our other senses, has to decide which of these is occurring. Occasionally it gets it wrong and we feel as if we are moving when, for example, it is the train next to us that is pulling out. This feeling of illusory self-motion is termed ‘vection’. It can produce much excitement and fun (as fairground owners know), but can also produce feelings of nausea and even vomiting. Understanding this sensation, and controlling it, are therefore worthwhile aims. It has long been thought that vection is reduced under conditions where the vestibular system is signalling no motion. When we accelerate while driving, for example, the vestibular system signals this acceleration, but once we have reached our cruising speed the vestibular system no longer signals anything (as it works by inertia of the fluids in the semicircular canals and otolith organs) — now our perception of motion is governed by our vision. Thus, if we view a video of the same driving sequence we do not immediately feel vection — this only occurs after some time, during the period of constant movement when we would not expect any vestibular activity anyway." @default.
