- W2015768356 abstract "The adverse effects of legislation to require parental involvement in consent for adolescent abortion as reported in the literature are summarized in response to an essay supporting such legislation. First it is unclear whether parental involvement means notification participation in the decision or consent. Probably most minors simply want to have the procedure without their parents knowledge. Surveys show that over half of adolescents do freely discuss their pregnancy with one or both parents: whether they would do so if required is unknown. Of those that have not confided in parents one third say they would not seek medical care but choose self-induced or illegal abortion rather than speak to parents. There is much clinical and laboratory evidence that teens have poor decision-making skills relative to adults although how these empirical results transfer to real life situations is unclear. It cannot be assumed that all parents are more competent at deciding for their children than are the girls themselves. Furthermore many teens have other adults confidants or even their older boyfriends to help work through the decision. Pregnancy presents an opportunity for family growth and development but in many cases such as incest or parental resistance required parental involvement may be detrimental or disruptive to family relationships or even contraindicated. Mandatory parental involvement may benefit only a minority of adolescents and would subvert the adolescents human rights and confidentiality." @default.
