- W2015778819 abstract "In many clay soils, drying and wetting cause non-uniform changes in water content and in the volume of soil and peds. Theoretical relations between total volume of soil, soil thickness and water content are sought for non-uniformly swelling and shrinking soil. Such soil is assumed to be composed of small elemental volumes, each of which does swell or shrink uniformly. It is also assumed that the non-uniformity of swelling or shrinking in such soils arises solely from spatial variation brought about by variations in evapotranspiration and infiltration. A constant ratio between movement of the soil in the vertical and horizontal dimensions is assumed for all elements of soil. By averaging over the soil volume the equations describing the volume change of individual elemental volumes, the averaged equations for non-uniform volume changes may be obtained. They show that the average and the spatial distribution of the changes in soil thickness determine the average changes in water content of the soil. It is concluded that the equations for uniform and non-uniform volume changing soils, though formally different, should in practice produce nearly identical results for clay soils. Dans de nombreux sols argileux les phénomènes de dessiccation et d'humectation provoquent des variations de volume importantes et non-uniformes. Dans cet article sont recherchées des relations théoriques entre la teneur en eau, le volume spécifique et l'épaisseur du sol pour de tels sols. Dans ce but, tout sol hétérogène est supposé divisible en volumes de sol élémentaires dont chacun présente un comportement uniforme. L'hétérogénéité spatiale des variations de volume est supposée provenir d'hétérogénéités spatiales de l'infiltration et de l'évapotranspiration et non d'une variabilit6 des propriétés de gonflement-retrait. On considère que les volumes élémentaires présentent un rapport constant entre les mouvements verticaux et horizontaux du sol. Les équations décrivant les variations de volume á l'échelle du sol sont obtenues par prise de moyenne des équations á l'échelle des volumes élémentaires. ées équations montrent que la moyenne des variations de teneur en eau d'un sol non-unifforme est liée á la moyenne et la dispersion spatiale des variations d'épaisseur du sol. En pratique toutefois il apparaît que les équations de variation de volume en sols uniformes et non-uniformes, bien que différentes sur le plan formel, produisent des résultats numériques très voisins dans la gamme des variations de volume constatées pour les sols argileux." @default.
