- W2015942012 abstract "Elevated homocysteine (HCY) has been identified as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in adults. However, little information on HCY is available in children. Because CVD remains the number one cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States and evidence shows precursors to this disease exist in children as young as two years of age there is a need for further investigation. Multiple risk factors, including elevated HCY, contribute to CVD in adults. Therefore, examining multiple risk factors in children and HCY levels may further elucidate factors related to CVD. PURPOSE to investigate the relationship of HCY levels with cardiovascular disease risk factors in school-aged children in high-risk (3 or more risk factors) or low-risk (2 or less risk factors) groups. METHODS 66 children (10.8 +/− 0.49 years of age) from the Children's Health Screening Project in northern Michigan completed health histories, dietary and physical activity questionnaires, and clinical screening procedures. 10 adult risk factors for CVD including: blood pressure, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, body composition, smoking, diabetes, physical inactivity, cardiorespiratory fitness, gender and family history of CVD, and their relationships to HCY were evaluated. In addition, HCY level was compared between children placed in a high-risk and low-risk group for CVD. RESULTS More than 30 percent of the children expressed three or more risk factors for CVD. However, no significant associations between the risk factors for CVD and HCY levels were identified in this study. CONCLUSION HCY levels were not different between children in the high-risk and low-risk groups. Funded by Northern Michigan Hospital Foundation" @default.
