The sulfur precovered surface facilitates explosive/autocatalytic desorption as a result of strong lateral interactions within the adlayer which is proposed to increase the number of bimolecular collisions between desorbed thiophene molecules and ruthenium containing species above the surface. Bimolecular collisions occurring above, but in close proximity to, the surface appear to provide an efficient means for forming and stabilizing RuC4H4S+. The above noted effect appears to be a short range interaction and is not observed during multilayer desorption from either clean or sulfur precovered Ru(0001)." @default.
