- W2016016977 abstract "When larvae of the parasitoid Cardiochiles nigriceps were injected into host larvae, Heliothis virescens, the parasitoid larvae were promptly encapsulated by the host. However, injected parasitoid larvae were not encapsulated by the host if the host was parasitized shortly after injection by a C. nigriceps female. These results suggest that the female parasitoid injects a diffusible substance which protects its progeny from encapsulation by the host. Eggs and larvae of the parasitoid when injected into hosts along with material derived from the calyx of the female parasitoid were protected from encapsulation suggesting the calyx to be a source of the protective material. Additional data suggest that another source of the protecting material is in the teratocytes which are liberated from the eggs of the hatching parasitoids." @default.
