- W2016046907 abstract "Abstract Due to large losses in reflection-type diffraction gratings, orthodox monochromator design in the soft X-ray range has usually implicitly assumed an unseverable connection between the diffraction function and the focusing (optical) function of a given instrument. However, since the recent development and manufacture of high-efficiency, ultra-small transmission gratings, such a constraint is no longer necessary. In this paper we present design possibilities for monochromators where the focusing (optical) function is explicitly separated from the diffraction function, and show that the individual optimization of both mirrors and gratings in recent years makes this a worthwhile design approach to consider. Finally, based on the above points, a novel monochromator design for the soft X-ray range at SSRL is presented and discussed." @default.
