- W2016071844 abstract "Abstract Patients who sustain a minor head injury and are taking Warfarin are generally discharged from the emergency department after four hours of normal neurological observations and a negative cranial computed tomography scan. Currently, a head injury advice card is given to their primary carer which describes the signs and symptoms of decreasing levels of consciousness and cerebral irritation. Research regarding the management and subsequent discharge of this group of patients is limited, however it is clear that the combination of a head injury and Warfarin requires more than a simple amalgamation of the various discharge advices currently available. The literature highlights the significant risk for patients developing potentially fatal complications such as subdural haemorrhages following a relatively minor head injury. Effective discharge management from the emergency department is imperative as increasing numbers of patients are being discharged earlier from hospital. This results in new obligations for registered nurses to develop discharge protocols that incorporate the relevant research in this area to provide ‘best practice'. A review of the literature was undertaken to compare current discharge practice to the researched evidence." @default.
