- W2016126506 abstract "Abstract : This study addresses itself to the problem of developing a theory for the interaction of real materials with low density, hypersonic, viscous flows. In analogy with methods previously utilized for the high Reynolds number boundary layer regime, heat and mass transfer relationships are herein derived which are valid in the hypersonic low Raynolds number regime. A rigorous mass transfer scaling theory is obtained, and it is demonstrated how high Reynolds number, boundary layer, ablation theories may be extended over the entire range of laminar, continuum hypersonic Reynolds numbers. The results of this theory are applied to the ablation of graphite. Previous experimental studies of graphite ablation required an 'a priori' assumption that the measured mass transfer rates could be reduced and compared with boundary layer theory if scaled in the precise manner derived herein. Therefore, experimental verification of this new scaling theory exists. It is expected that this theory may be applied to other ablation materials with equal success. (Author)" @default.
