- W2016148265 abstract "In this paper, the strain of probiotic used was initially recognized as a strain of Lactobacillus acidophilus, based on biochemical tests. However, a recent molecular identification (16S RNA) has identified the strain as a Lactobacillus gasseri. The exact nature of such a change is unknown. However, changing of bacterial names is not uncommon. Strains of L. acidophilus and Lactobacillus fermentum have been renamed as Lactobacillus reuteri and Lactobacillus casei, respectively (Falagas et al., 2006Falagas M.E. Betsi G.I. Athanasiou S. Probiotics for prevention of recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis: A review.J. Antimicrob. Chemother. 2006; 58: 266-272Crossref PubMed Scopus (182) Google Scholar). Strains of L. acidophilus have been deposited in various culture banks (e.g., American Type Culture Collection and Belgium Co-ordinated Collections of Microorganisms) as L. gasseri. Some currently known L. gasseri strains are also formerly known as L. acidophilus, with changes occurring mainly from 1989 to 1997 (BCCM, 2011BCCM (Belgium Co-ordinated Collections of Microorganism). 2011. Accessed March 8, 2011. http://bccm.belspo.be/db/lmg_search_results.php?FIRSTITEM=1&LIST1=ALL+FIELDS&TEXT1=gasseri&FIRSTITEM=1&LIST2=ALL+FIELDS&TEXT2=acidophilus&FIRSTITEM=1&LIST3=STRNUM&TEXT3=&FIRSTITEM=1&LIST4=STRNUM&TEXT4=&FIRSTITEM=1&LIST5=STRNUM&TEXT5=&CONJ=AND&RANGE=20&B3=Run+Query.Google Scholar). The authors have accepted the current identification results and, thus, Lactobacillus acidophilus CHO-220 will be renamed as Lactobacillus gasseri CHO-220. A synbiotic containing Lactobacillus acidophilus CHO-220 and inulin improves irregularity of red blood cellsJournal of Dairy ScienceVol. 93Issue 10PreviewThis randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, and parallel-design study was conducted to investigate the effect of a synbiotic product containing Lactobacillus acidophilus CHO-220 and inulin on the irregularity in shape of red blood cells (RBC) in hypercholesterolemic subjects. The subjects (n = 32) were randomly allocated to 2 groups, a treatment group (synbiotic product) and a control group (placebo), and received 4 capsules of either synbiotic or placebo daily for 12 wk. Morphological representation via scanning electron microscopy showed that the occurrence of spur RBC was improved upon supplementation of the synbiotic. Full-Text PDF Open Archive" @default.
