- W2016152170 abstract "Developing nutrient management systems of high cost-effectiveness is required to improve the sustainability of the swine production industry in North Carolina. The conversion of nutrients into plant biomass is drawing growing attention because it not only addresses water pollution but also provides a profitable way to recycle the nutrients by producing biomass that can be used to generate various value-added products. Duckweed is a fast-growing aquatic plant that has shown great capacity to recover nutrients from artificial or real swine wastewaters in many lab-scale studies. However, investigations based on pilot-scale operations are necessary to better evaluate the practical effectiveness of this technology. In this study, Spirodela polyrrhiza, a local duckweed strain, was grown in a 300 m2 duckweed pond for the removal of the nutrients from anaerobically treated swine wastewater. Over a 16-week experimental period, the wastewater was fed to the duckweed pond semi-continuously to provide nutrients for the growth of duckweed, and the duckweed biomass was harvested regularly to eventually remove the nutrients from the water body. The nutrient removal rate and duckweed yield were monitored to evaluate the performance of the duckweed-based wastewater treatment system. The results show that ammonium (NH4-N), the major nutrient concern in swine wastewater, was removed at 1.12 g m-2 d-1. The excellent growth and high protein content of duckweed enabled a protein yield of 2.11 g m-2 d-1 throughout the experiment." @default.
