- W201619792 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the epidemiology of the perinatal telencephalic leukoencephalopathy characterized by hypertrophic astrocytes and acutely damaged glia. The cluster of hypertrophic astrocytes and acutely damaged glia were seen only in infants who survived more than 1 week. Epidemiologic support for this came from comparing infants who had hypertrophic astrocytes and amphophilic globules to those who had acutely damaged glial cells and amphophilic globules. The two groups differed only minimally on many risk factors; however, they had more prominent differences in time-related factors. Increased risk of giving birth to a baby who had hypertrophic astrocytes and acutely damaged glia was associated with five indicators and correlates of low socioeconomic status. Increased risk was also associated with registration for prenatal care after the 24th week, two urinary tract infections, and three correlates of toxemia. The first mechanism, endotoxin exposure, reflects not only the magnitude of the risk of this entity associated with septicemia but also the epidemiologic and laboratory support for the hypothesis that endotoxin adversely affects developing white matter. In addition, three other risk factors either directly or indirectly correlate with septicemia." @default.
