- W2016200649 abstract "In the study of martensitic transformations, particularly thermoelastic martensitic transformations, it is of some importance to determine the extent of microstructural reproducibility during thermal cycling. Although it has long been known that martensite plates can form over and over again at the same location, such observations are qualitative in nature. The present communication reports a color technique which very accurately permits the extent of microstructure reproducibility to be assessed. [1] The specimen for study was an Fe-24 at % Pt alloy which was ordered for 200 hours at 550°C. Following the ordering treatment the Ms temperature is depressed below room temperature, but the martensite is thermoelastic and reverses completely during heating. Thus the behavior during subsequent cooling runs can be determined. Figures 1 (a-g), photographed at 135°C, are surface relief micrographs which show the results obtained. The appearance at the end of the 1st and 2nd cycles is shown in (a) and (b) respectively (the light and dark regions correspond to martensite plates with different tilts). These and additional cycles were further studied in the following way. Positive black and white slides were made from each micrograph. Then, slides from any two subsequent cycles were placed in a dual loading projector with a beam splitter. One slide was filtered with red and the other with green, and a single composite image was projected on a screen and photographed in color. Thus, regions of the specimen which transformed identically during the two cycles appear yellow or black, while regions which are different appear as red or green. Figure 1 (c) shows the result comparing the 1st and 2nd cycles; (d) the 3rd and 4th cycles; (e) the 10th and l l th cycles; (f) the 20th and 21st cycles; and (g) the 30th and 31st cycles. As can be seen the presence of the red and green colors progressively decreases, and essentially a" @default.
