- W2016202435 abstract "So long ago as 1913 I showed that when cells were exposed to radium (beta and gamma radiation) during mitosis, they were more affected than when exposed during the non-dividing state. The effect of the radiation was measured in two ways: in the case of bean roots by alteration in the rate of growth (elongation) of the roots, and in the case of the ova of Ascaris megalocephala by percentage mortality. In the case of bean roots, some were exposed to beta radiation during the day (11.0 a.m.—3.0 p.m.) when mitoses are in abeyance, and others during the night (12.0 a.m.–2.0 a.m.) when they are abundant. The differential effect is shown in the figures 1 and 2 taken from the original paper. These figures, reproduced here because bean roots were used in the present investigation, show the effect of radiation on the growth of these roots. It is seen that after radiation the root continues to grow normally for three or four days, after which, when the dose was large, growth ceased abruptly. With smaller doses, the growth is stopped for one or more days and then recommences. Thus is available a delicate measure of the effect of radiation. Advantage has been taken of this in the present investigation, in an endeavour to demonstrate the special sensitive period in the life history of the non-dividing cell which Spear (1926–1932) and other workers at the Strangeways Laboratory state, occurs shortly before the cell passes into mitosis." @default.
