Firstly, the acute response to 0.5 mg of quartz and bentonite was followed up to 7 days after instillation. The numbers and types of cells recovered and the amounts of “free” LDH and protein in the lavage fluid were measured. Even at such low doses, it was possible to detect and quantify changes in these parameters. Secondly, the effects of 5 mg of quartz up to 100 days after instillation were compared with the effects of 5 mg of two reputedly non-fibrogenic dusts, bentonite and TiO 2 . Measurements of “free” peroxidase and lysozyme were also included. The most marked difference between the dusts was the prolonged infiltration of PMN into the lung in the presence of quartz. This may implicate a role for these cells in the pathogenesis of pulmonary fibrosis." @default.
