- W2016245114 abstract "The effects of corticosteroids on lymphoid cell populations were studied in the LAF1 mouse. Normal bone marrow cells show a small but definite response to phytohemagglutinin (PHA). Equal numbers of marrow cells from mice given hydrocortisone 2 days previously show considerable enhancement of the PHA response. Whole-body irradiation with selective shielding indicated that this enhanced response resulted from redistribution of peripheral thymus-derived lymphocytes into the marrow after hydrocortisone treatment. Heterogeneity within peripheral thymus-derived cells was also demonstrated. Normal spleens contain cells which respond to PHA but are sensitive to anti-θ serum. Some of these cells are sensitive to hydrocortisone and others are resistant to hydrocortisone. Normal bone marrow contains a third population of cells which respond to PHA but which are resistant to hydrocortisone and to anti-θ serum. Hydrocortisone treatment results in the appearance in bone marrow of additional PHA-responsive cells which are sensitive to anti-θ, and which are presumably derived from other peripheral lymphoid tissues." @default.
