- W2016260097 abstract "Vasa previa is a rare condition when fetal blood vessels run through the membranes over the cervix unprotected by umbilical cord or placental tissue. Undiagnosed before birth it leads to significant fetal morbidity and mortality. Incidence of clinically recognized vasa previa is 1:2500 deliveries. In University Medical center Maribor we have 2100 to 2200 deliveries per year. 3 cases of vasa previa occurred last year in our region with a good outcome. All were singleton pregnancy. In 2 cases it was diagnosed prenatally with vaginal 2D and Doppler ultrasound, in third case the diagnosis was set clinically during elective caesarean of breech lied fetus. In the first case vasa previa was Type I, diagnosed in 31 weeks of gestation. Pregnancy was observed and she received a prophylactic dose of corticosteroids at 32 weeks of gestation. At 36 weeks of gestation an emergency caesarean section was performed due to preterm premature rupture of membranes. A 3120g male was delivered with Apgar scores of 9 and 9 at 1 and 5 min respectively. In the second case vasa previa was Type II, diagnosed at 37 weeks during hospitalisation because of irregular tonisation, with history of resolving placenta previa. A planned caesarean section at 38 weeks of gestation was performed. A 3110g male was delivered with Apgar scores of 8 and 9 at 1 and 5 min. In third case, vasa previa was Type I, was diagnosed late, during elective caesarean section in 39 weeks of breach lie, with no risk factors for vasa previa. A 2990g female was delivered with Apgar scores of 8 and 9 at 1 and 5 min. In our opinion vaginal 2D and Doppler ultrasound in third trimester of fetal surveillance is of crucial importance in order to rule out the possibility of vasa previa, if risk factors are present." @default.
