- W2016282610 abstract "The authors have investigated the kinetics of fracture of oriented polycaproamide fibres at 4·2–423 K and the Kevlar-49 rigid chain polymer at 4·2–643 K. The thermofluctuation mechanism of fracture operates in the high temperature region. In the region 4·2–200 K the conditions of fracture correspond to the manifestation of quantum statistics in the molecular dynamics of polymers. The “characteristic” temperatures of fracture θp ≃ 650 K (for polycaproamide) and 950 K (for the Kevlar-49 polymer) are evaluated; they lie in the region of the characteristic temperatures of the skeletal vibrations of the polymer molecules. Taking into account quantum statistics the authors determine the activation energies of the fracture of the polymers which proved to be close to the degradation energies. It is concluded that the low temperature kinetics of rupture of the stressed skeletal bonds in these polymers is due to multi-particle tunnelling (or fluctuations involving zero vibrations)." @default.
