- W2016285753 abstract "Phagocytosis is the principal mechanism by which polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) defend against infections. The outcome of this interaction between the PMN and microorganisms is determined largely by the coating of target particles (microbes) by opsonins thereby providing phagocytic recognition signals. The PMN membrane is the link between the humoral response of opsonization and the cellular response of phagocytosis. Stimulation of opsonic receptors by attachment of opsonized particles to the PMN surface membrane leads to the internalization of the particle through invagination of the cell surface (Cline, 1975). A simultaneous activation of neutrophil respiration by perturbation of membrane receptors elicits a burst of oxygen-dependent metabolic events (Baidridge, 1933). The primary event appears to be initiated by an oxidase, residing on the surface of the membrane, which catalyzes an electron exchange from a reduced pyridine nucleotide (current evidence favors NZDPH) to molecular oxygen so producing the free radical, 0 (Babior, 1978):" @default.
