- W2016337584 abstract "Abstract Ionospheric implications of our recent laboratory measurements of electron temperature (Te) relaxation rates in plasmas containing molecular oxygen and nitrogen are considered. The results indicate that below a ‘threshold’ Te of approximately 1300 K the dominant Te relaxation mechanism throughout the ionospheric regions considered is the collisional excitation of the rotational states of molecular nitrogen, whereas for Te ≳ 1300 K an important contribution due to the onset of vibrational excitation of N2 should result. These general deductions are in accord with theoretical expectations, but important differences are found in the magnitudes of the relaxation rates and in the value of the above threshold Te. Our laboratory measurements indicate that rotational excitation of O2 is expected to play only a minor role in this relaxation process, contrary to the inferences made from previous laboratory studies, although a contribution due to the vibrational excitation of O2 cannot be ruled out." @default.
