- W2016363346 abstract "In adults, a noxious stimulus applied to the sole of the foot stimulates pain receptors, which pass the nociceptive impulse via C (unmyelinated) and A-delta (thinly myelinated) fibres to the substantia gelatinosa of the dorsal horn of the spinal cord, and results in the withdrawal of the foot—the cutaneous flexion reflex. The threshold for this reflex is lower in neonates than in adults and can be elicited by a non-painful innocuous stimulus, such as mechanical stimulation of the skin by von Frey hairs. The physiological basis of this low-threshold response is unclear, but is probably partly due to the immature organisation of connections within the dorsal horn of the spinal cord such that both low-intensity and high-intensity stimuli excite synapses that are purely nociceptive in adults." @default.
