- W2016392105 abstract "Numerous epidemiological and experimental studies show that early nutrition—even in the fetal period—influences the risk of cardiovascular disease later in life. In this prospective intervention study, 256 pregnant women were randomized to receive a diet based on current recommendations for modifying lipid intake plus probiotic antiinflammatory agents; diet plus a placebo; or control plus placebo. Each mother-infant pair was followed through pregnancy and up to age 6 months, focusing on blood pressure recorded using an automated oscillometric device. The diet was intended to increase the intake of unsaturated fatty acids and lower the intake of saturated fatty acids. Products with a favorable fat composition were provided for use at home along with nutritional counseling. Women in the 3 study groups had similar clinical characteristics and were in good health. The dietary intervention did lead to qualitative changes in the intake of particular foods and nutrients, but total energy intake remained similar in all groups. No differences in infant blood pressure were apparent at age 6 months. A complex U-shaped interrelationship was observed in which the highest and lowest quartiles of intake of specific nutrients, carbohydrate, and monounsaturated fatty acids, compared with intermediate quartiles, resulted in higher blood pressure at age 6 months. The relationship between maternal carbohydrate intake during pregnancy and infant blood pressure remained significant after adjusting for body length and breast-feeding. A reverse-U-shaped trend was noted between fruit intake and infant systolic blood pressure. On multivariate analysis, maternal carbohydrate intake best accounted for infant blood pressure at age 6 months. These results suggest that dietary counseling of pregnant women provides an opportunity to program infant blood pressure in a favorable way." @default.
