- W2016404013 abstract "Summary o 1. Observations of the processes of recovery from mental illnesses without treatment show that new incentives often stimulate new and therapeutic behavioral responses in patients. 2. Incentives are widely employed in penology, industry and education and claim much support as modifiers of behavior. 3. Most psychotherapists try to make patients aware of existing immediate and remote incentives to which patients may respond with changed behavior; they do not, however, attempt to manipulate these incentives directly themselves. 4. In a small series of patients, incentives were manipulated by the therapist who provided various overt rewards and punishments as incentives to changed behavior in the patients. 5. In most of the patients for whom the incentives were provided, the desired behavioral changes occurred. 6. Direct manipulation of incentives for patients by the psychotherapist has some important disadvantages which generally make it undesirable. But occasionally, with certain patients changes in incentives provided by the therapist may accelerate changes in behavior and promote therapeutic experiences." @default.
