- W2016429592 abstract "The medulla and pons of urethane-anesthetized or unanesthetized decerebrate female rats were explored for single-unit responses to probing of the vagina and cervix. The animals were previously ovariectomized and about half of them were estrogen-treated prior to recording. Cells displaying distinct, short-latency responses to genital stimulation (genitally-sensitive neurons) were located principally within the regions of the pons and medulla known to receive ascending projections from ventrolateral spinal cord axons. The region appearing to have the greatest density of genitally-sensitive neurons was nucleus reticularis gigantocellularis of the medulla. Most of the genitally-sensitive neurons reponded to rectal probing, tail pinch, and tactile or light mechanical stimuli. Responses to rectal probing were usually similar in pattern and nearly as pronounced as responses to vaginal probing. The basic response properties of the genitally-sensitive neurons were similar in the unanesthetized decerebrate and urethane-anesthetized preparations, except that changes in the EEG of anesthetized animals were sometimes accompanied by alterations in the spontaneous and stimulus-evoked unit activity. For some neurons, responsiveness to nociceptive stimulation was blocked or attenuated by the concurrent application of vaginal or rectal probing. Similarities and differences in the properties of genitally-sensitive neurons in the brain stem of the female rat and cat are discussed in relation to the different behavioral responses to genital stimulation exhibited by these species. It is suggested that genitally-sensitive neurons in the rat pons and medulla may be involved in the elicitation of forebrain arousal responses and blockage of reflexive responses to nociceptive stimuli in the female rat." @default.
