- W2016535640 abstract "Incorporation of a well-designed rehabilitation program after injury or surgery optimizes the likelihood of successful return of function in the cervical spine-injured athlete. The use of various modalities—including heat, cold, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, massage, and traction—decrease pain and inflammation and increase flexibility. The application of specific rehabilitative techniques such as proprioceptive neuromuscular stimulation, stretching, and others effectively restore motion. Isometric strengthening ensures restoration of normal postural tone and strength and prevents reinjury. These modalities and techniques are then incorporated into three distinct but overlapping phases—early, intermediate, and late—emphasizing elimination of pain and inflammation, restoration of motion and strength, and preparation for return to activity and injury prevention. Specific rehabilitation protocols used in the treatment of some common cervical spine injuries in athletes are reviewed." @default.
