- W2016561610 abstract "1.1. Maintenance of a constant serum lithium concentration (SeLi) is fundamental in order to avoid intoxication. SeLi is inversely correlated to the renal lithium clearance (CLi), so a fall of CLi may be dangerous.2.2. CLi varies in parallel with the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and the fractional lithium excretion (FELi). GFR decreases during dehydration, during various kidney diseases and in pregnant women it falls from an increased level to normal level at the time of delivery.3.3. FELi decreases during intake of a low sodium diet, during extrarenal loss of sodium and during intake of saliuretics such as thiazides, furosemide and spironolactone. At high concentrations lithium leads to renal loss of sodium and water.4.4. The consequent lowering of CLi leads to an increase of SeLi and further influence on the kidney function, and thereby a vicious circle starts which leads to intoxication.5.5. Treatment of lithium intoxication consists in correction of water and electrolyte balance and rapid removal of lithium from the organism, if necessary by hemodialysis or peritoncal dialysis." @default.
