- W2016566438 abstract "Two trials were conducted to determine the suitability of liquid whey or fababean starch as energy sources when fed with urea in a liquid supplement. In a preliminary growth trial, 80 crossbred feeder lambs were fed to a final body weight of 41 kg. Average daily gain of lambs fed either whey in a liquid supplement (WLS) or fababean starch liquid supplement (FLS) along with a barley-based dry ration were similar to a soybean meal control and better than the negative, urea control. Consumption of WLS was decreased as the level of urea increased in the supplement. The effects of feeding WLS and FLS on dry matter and crude protein digestibility and metabolism in feeder lambs was studied in a second trial. All dietary treatments were isonitrogenous and contained 14% crude protein. Feeding the liquid supplement along with a high fibre dry ration improved dry matter digestibility. Although nitrogen digestibility was not affected by treatment, nitrogen retention was reduced for the negative control. Dietary treatments significantly influenced serum urea, rumen ammonia and percent acetic, propionic and valeric acid in the rumen. Fababean liquid supplement, providing 40% of the dietary protein resulted in improved nitrogen retention, lower ammonia and serum urea, decreased acetate and increased rumen propionate and valerate. Results of the two trials indicated that whey and fababean starch can be used with satisfactory results as an energy source in liquid supplements for ruminants." @default.
