- W2016646911 abstract "Economic analysis of feasible remineralization and potabilization policies of desalinated water emphasizes the desirability of a process producing fresh water which is of high quality in every respect (health, stability, palatability, etc.). In fact the cost of such a process is only a fraction of that required for actual desalination (7.5% in the reported case). The paper discusses a complete remineralization and potabilization process, particularly suited for desalinated water with relatively low residual TDS. The process is based on the use of natural carbonate rocks and CO2, and enables all the basic stability parameters of the fresh water produced to be adjusted to the desired values, even in the presence of relatively large quantities of chlorides (100-200 ppm) and fairly high final TDS (400-500 ppm); at the same time purchase of large quantities of manufactured salts is avoided. The critical steps in designing such a plant are outlined and a comparative assessment is made of the capital and running costs of the suggested process and of another using manufactured salts such as CaCl2 and NaHCO3. It is also concluded that the remineralization and potabilization unit is increasingly becoming a specialized part of the desalting plant, the design of which calls for specific know-how." @default.
