- W2016674573 abstract "Results are presented on a novel application of catalysis and reaction engineering to the chemical modification of commercially available polybutadiene polymers. The functionalized polyaldehyde products are key intermediates in the development of various polymer derivatives which form the basis for various novel material and component applications, such as the manufacture of automobile body components by reaction injection molding processing. The particular polyaldehydes examined here are formed through the liquid-phase hydroformylation of a low molecular weight polybutadiene consisting of 12 wt% 1,2 and 88 wt% 1,4 cis/trans isomers using Wilkinson's homogeneous rhodium catalyst precursor with excess triphenylphosphine. Characterization of the reaction products using 13C and 1H NMR shows that the olefin units in the polybutadiene are selectively hydroformylated to the 1,2 terminal branched and 1,4 internally branched aldehyde products. Additional characterization using gel permeation chromatography with total mass and aldehyde group specific detectors shows that the aldehyde addition is reasonably uniform over the entire range of polymer molecular weight. Interpretation of intrinsic kinetic data shows that the global reaction rate can be described by a power-law type relationship with fractional order dependence on olefin unit and catalyst concentration. Use of this rate equation to predict the performance of a mechanically agitated reactor for use in preliminary process design and development of process economics is also described." @default.
