• W2016759097 abstract "A case-control study of stroke in young adults, 15–40 years of age, was undertaken to determine the relative risk due to cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption. Cases were selected from four community hospitals in northern Illinois and consisted of 54 stroke patients admitted between 1975 and 1983 without previous record of hypertension, diabetes or cardiovascular disorders. Cases were frequency matched to 864 community controls for a case-control ratio of 1:16. Among females, cigarette smoking was associated with an approximate four-fold increase in the risk of stroke (OR = 4.30; 95% CI = 1.99−9.27). There was strong interaction between smoking and oral contraceptive use, and females who smoked and used oral contraceptives were 17–18 times more likely to suffer a stroke than those who did neither. Overall, approximately 37% of the incidence of stroke in females could be attributed to cigarette smoking, after adjustment for oral contraceptive use. Cigarette smoking was not significantly associated with stroke in males (OR = 1.15; 95% CI = 0.48−2.74). The relationship of alcohol consumption to stroke in young adults was not clear. Overall, drinkers were 1.5 times more likely than nondrinkers to have had a stroke, after adjusting for smoking status, but the association was not statistically significant (OR = 1.51; 95% CI = 0.82−2.80)." @default.
