- W2016805373 abstract "Abstract In the brain, the various actions of histamine are mediated via three subclasses of histamine receptors, described in this article by Jean-Charles Schwartz and colleagues . The types of cellular responses controlled by these three receptors are becoming identified. Actions at H 1 -receptors, responsible for the notorious ‘drowsiness' side-effects of antihistamines appear to be mediated by breakdown of inositol phosphates which alter intracellular Ca 2+ levels. Actions at H 2 -receptors receptors are cAMP-linked. H 3 -receptors have only recently been identified in the brain. They appear to be true presynaptic autoreceptors which control histamine synthesis and release. The search is on for selective H 2 - and H 3 -receptor agonist and antagonists with therapeutic potential." @default.
