- W2016806972 abstract "It has been estimated that the incidence of dermatitis in the general population following industrial, environmental, and cosmetic exposure ranges from 1.5 to 5.4%, with allergic contact dermatitis being reported at approximately 7%. The cosmetics industry of the 1990s will continue to evolve, with technological advances providing consumers with innovative products and, ultimately, exposure to novel ingredients. As exposure to and experience with new ingredients and products occur, it will become increasingly important for the industry to respond with continued development and refinement of preclinical and clinical safety dermal assessments. New approaches to performing dermal risk exposure assessments coupled with our new understanding of cutaneous biology are reviewed. Key considerations and information needed to perform dermal risk assessments, a review of commercially available in vitro skin tests, as well as techniques to assess biochemical, metabolic, and immunologic activity of the skin following exposure to new cosmetic ingredients and products are discussed. Since this decade will undoubtedly be the decade of cosmeceuticals, recent advances in dermatotoxicology and immunotoxicology will provide the consumer products industry with the tools to predict and interpret more accurately the safety and performance of new products." @default.
