- W2016814357 abstract "Adherence is an important initial step in the pathogenesis of infection by Haemophilus influenzae. We have adapted a microassay based on adherence to dacron fibres to study non-specific aspects of the adherence capabilities of this organism. This assay provides a simple, sensitive and rapid method for measuring adherence, and it eliminates variables reported in studies using other types of assays. Non-capsulated strains were significantly more adherent than capsulated strains. Strains of biotype II were significantly more adherent than strains of other biotypes. Glucose inhibited adherence of all biotype I strains tested and galactosamine inhibited all biotype I, II and III strains tested. These results indicate that strains of H. influenzae have biotype-specific adhesins on their cell surfaces which may be involved in binding to specific carbohydrate receptors. This study shows that the adherence of H. influenzae is dependent on the presence or absence of a capsule and on the biotype involved." @default.
