Tests were performed on a system containing 3×10−9 Torr of argon in equilibrium with a physically adsorbed phase at 77 °K. The surface phase theory is used to estimate parameters of the system (e.g., pumping speed, leak rate, quantity of gas in a physically adsorbed phase) and then estimates are compared with direct observations. Variations of the pressure of argon in this system are compared with those of carbon monoxide at room temperature in the same system. The generality of the surface phase process for many gases in vacuum systems is discussed." @default.
