- W2017003137 abstract "Background & Aims: Even though periodical colonoscopy is essential for malignancy surveillance of ulcerative colitis (UC) patients, total colonoscopy is suspected to have an adverse effect on UC. However, limited data are available as to the safety of total colonoscopy on UC patients. To evaluate the safety on the patients with inactive UC, we investigated the exacerbation rate after colonoscopy. Methods: A total of 89 consecutive UC patients undergoing colonoscopy at a single centre were evaluated for UC disease activity index (UC-DAI) between July 2004 and Nov. 2005. We defined inactive-UC as UC-DAI of less than three. 56 inactive UC patients underwent colonoscopy. Each of these patients was sex-, age- and UC-DAI-matched to a control without colonoscopy. During a month after the colonoscopy, UC-DAI of 112 patients was monitored. Exacerbation is defined as increase of UC-DAI score by 2 or more. Three experienced endoscopists (who experienced more than 1000 colonoscopies) performed colonoscopy in this study. Parameters used in this study were the insertion time to the cecum and visual analog scale of patients discomfort (0 cm, no pain; 10 cm, worst pain of life). Results: 1. Mean insertion time to cecum was 416 +/− 234 sec. Visual analog scale of discomfort was 1.8 +/− 0.5. 2. There was no significant difference in exacerbation rate between UC undergoing colonoscopy (3/46: 6.5%) and the control (4/46: 8.7%). Conclusion: Colonoscopy did not cause a significant adverse effect to UC patients, in terms of exacerbation." @default.
