Question is raised concerning the justification for the use of a thermal analysis which is based on the assumption of isothermal dendrites. An alternate analytical procedure is then applied which considers the non-isothermal effects resulting from localized curvature and kinetics. No unique, linear, kinetic constant could be found conforming to any region of the experimental data, but a noticeable convergence of theory to experiment is observed in the region of large undercooling. Our results appear to confirm the quantitative determination of a linear kinetic coefficient for white phosphorus (P4) solidification, but dispute the previously reported conclusions concerning the observation of a kinetic transition region and the operation of a maximum velocity criterion. Limitations of the latter analysis and of the general experimental procedures for obtaining kinetic information are discussed." @default.
