Performance of optical remote sensing systems can be improved by conventional methods of communication technique such as modulation and correlation. This paper reviews the principle of standard remote sensing systems based on pulse signals and advanced remote sensing systems with random modulation, continuous wave and correlation detection. Subsequently, this paper presents the discussion and comparison of two different methods of performance calculation: one is based on required number of photons (physical point-of-view) and the other on required signal-to-noise ratio (communication point-of-view).
