- W2017079660 abstract "The number of chiasmata formed in the common British grasshopper Chorthippus br brunneus can be altered by low doses of X-rays if these are given at any one of four discrete periods in meiosis. During the first of these periods, which corresponds with the time of premeiotic DNA-synthesis, X-irradiation significantly depressed mean cell chiasma frequency when compared with the controls. In contrast, the same dose given at leptotene or at late zygotene-early pachytene significantly increased this metric. In all cases it was found that maximum response was obtained with the lowest dose used (75 rad given at 100 rad/min), higher doses producing no further increase. The pattern of response of the remaining sensitive period, corresponding with late leptotene-early zygotene, was different. Here the reduction in chiasma frequency appeared to be greater with the higher doses. Indeed at this time the only significant reduction in mean cell chiasma frequency was obtained with the highest dose used (225 rad). An attempt was made to interpret the effects of X-rays in terms of an interference of repair processes with the normal meiotic sequence." @default.
