- W2017101743 abstract "This paper discusses the results of an investigation of the discharge characteristics of military type lead-acid and nickel-cadmium batteries at extreme low temperatures and lead to the development of a reliable method for starting the M1/M60 Tank APU. The rotating cup fuel atomization system used in the APU proved to be very well-suited for starting the APU over the extremes of the environment with all types of diesel fuels and JP-4 jet fuel and consistently provided reliable operation at ambient temperatures as low as −70°F (−56.7°C). This proven capability of the APU provided the only means for successful starting of the Lycoming AGT-1500 main engine of the Abrams Ml Battle Tank at ambient temperatures below −25°F (−31.7°C) during low temperature tests in the Eglin AFB Climatic Laboratory and cold region field tests at Fort Greeley, Alaska." @default.
