- W2017127762 abstract "An on-chip integrated micro-thermostat is discussed that, unlike conventional micro-thermostats, is capable of active heating and active cooling of a well-defined micromachined volume of silicon. All three functions within the thermostat—temperature sensing, heating and cooling—are implemented by means of on-chip integrated thermoelectric elements only. This way, the best possible performance in terms of response and temperature range is obtained, while device complexity is kept to an absolute minimum, and fabrication compatibility with IC processing is maintained. This paper is focused on the high-level implementation of the device. The emphasis is on active cooling, which enables operation close to or below ambient temperature. Therefore, the thermoelectric cooler (TEC) is considered the most important component of the system. The performance of such a TEC based on poly-SiGe has been fully analysed and characterised. The first measurements indicate the cooler is capable of a modest cooling capability of 2.1 K below ambient temperature, with a milliseconds response time." @default.
