- W2017185680 abstract "Corrosion experiments have been carried out on a number of NiCrAlX-type model alloys where X is a minor reactive element, Zr, Hf, or Si, at levels of 0.5, 1 or 2%: an alloy containing both Si and Zr was also studied. All the experimental alloys contained standard amounts of Cr (25%) and Al (2.5%). Control experiments were also conducted with a binary Ni25Cr alloy. Alloys were exposed to an SO2/O2(1:4) atmosphere at 700°C for periods of up to 500 h. In comparison with the binary control, alloy corrosion was significantly inhibited by the various modifications to the base alloy composition. This was reflected in reductions in the parabolic rate constants observed during an initial protective stage of corrosion, and an increase in the exposure time before a characteristic form of accelerated attack took place. Additions of Si and Zr, together, were the most beneficial in reducing this tendency towards accelerated, breakaway attack. These observations are discussed in relation to current theories concerning the role of minor additions of reactive and rare earth elements of chromia-forming alloys." @default.
