- W2017293433 abstract "Summary Microbiological studies were carried out on newborn infants born at Ahmadu Bello University Hospital Zaria for bacterial colonisation at various sites, which included throat (162); skin (161); umbilicus (166); external ear (159); rectum (164); meconium (62) and gastric aspirate (116). In all 17 genera or groups of microbes were isolated, from various sites. Of all the sites studied the skin showed highest degree of colonisation (68·94 per cent) while the rectum was the least colonised (5·48 per cent). Predominant organisms colonising throat, skin, umbilicus and external ear were Gram-negative bacilli, the commonest being Escherichia coli and Klebsiella species. Gram-positive organisms colonised relatively few babies. Candida albicans was predominantly isolated from throat, external ear, umbilicus and skin. A similar pattern of coliform colonisation was found in gastric aspirates, rectum and meconium. Pathogens such as Salmonella paratyphi and Shigella dysenteriae were recorded in a few instances. The level of microbial colonisation found in the study suggests that the high perinatal mortality observed in Zaria may be due to the fact that babies are born with infections." @default.
